Smoke Signals

Smoke Signals

Shot during the secret “Paul’s Alumni Weekend” workshop earlier this month.  Two stacked 4-minute exposures for 8-minute star trails and extra-smooshy clouds.  Pure moonlight here, proof positive that every image doesn’t need to be light painted. Man, we had fun!

Fresh Out Of Mollusk

Fresh Out of Mollusk

“The Mollusk” a 1956 Cadillac RV conversion at the final Pearsonville workshop.  It’s been moved around the yard several times in the last few years, so I’ve been able shoot this beast numerous ways as different angles open up.  It was saved, moved into the new fenced compound. Undoubtedly, this will be the last time […]

We Rise at Dusk

We Rise at Dusk

1960 Dodge Dart, my first shot of the night during the “Farewell to Pearsonville” workshop in March 2011. 2-minute exposure.  What looks like sunlight on the left fin is actually from the rising moon. The rest of the lighting is snooted LED flashlights.

Judge on the Big Shot 2 in Singapore

In August I was flown to Singapore, for one day, to appear as a judge on an episode of the reality TV show “The Big Shot 2.”  The competitors assignment was to shoot images in a nightclub, conveying the theme “It’s getting late.” It was up to me (and the 2 other judges) to select […]

San Francisco Chronicle Article

San Francisco Chronicle Article

Been on the road for a few days doing a “secret alumni workshop” at Paul’s, and managed to miss a couple of things while I was gone.  The most important being this article in the SF Chronicle!  I’m constantly amazed at how much night photography has grown over the past few years. And then there’s […]

Mineral A100

Mineral A100

Early ’60s Dodge A100 van, rolled at Kincaid Mine in Central Nevada. Four 4-minute exposures, stacked for 16 minute star trails.  Most of the van was a 5th exposure stripped in on top.  The roof was lit with a xenon Stinger from 25 yards away and the interior with a red LED from the rear […]

Last Stop Before Eternity

Last Stop Before Eternity

Also shot at the last Pearsonville workshop in March 2011. Hard to believe I had to spend 30 nights in this junkyard before finally getting to this bus. Three 4-minute exposures stacked for 12 minute star trails and cloud movement.  Snooted LED on the logo and green-gelled strobe inside the bus.  Everything else is moonlight.

Dagmars in Heaven

1956 Cadillac Coupe de Ville on the back side of the racetrack, at the abandoned Pearsonville junkyard along highway 395 in Eastern California.  This was shot during the “Farewell to Pearsonville” workshop, March 2011.  Most of this sprawling junkyard was crushed and liquidated and the remainder, consolidated behind a strong new fence. 3 minute exposure […]
