Paul piled them up real nice for us, didn’t he? Protomachine flashlight set to red, lime and ultramarine. Composite of two 4-minute exposures (for lighting, not star trails) and some dodge and burn. “Paul’s Junkyard” night photography and light painting workshop, October 2012.
She Rides the Rails
Home last night from the “Double-Secret Alumni Workshop” at Paul’s junkyard. A blast was had by all. Thanks to David Dasinger for bringing this creepy hand-painted doll. Once he took her out of his trunk on the last night, I wandered the yard most of the night with her tucked under my arm. Lit with […]
The Corrugated Nightmare
The mill building at the long-abandoned Atolia Mine. When I visited the site 10 years ago, this building was still filled with complex separating machinery, offices, kitchenette and a wet lab. The entire interior is gutted now. Once I saw the potential for symmetrically lining up the windows and concrete foundation inside, I made a […]
Too Big for Scrappers
Atolia Mine. July 2012 Full moon, magenta and orange Protomachines light. 264 second exposure.
Atolia’s Back Door
Back door to the assayer’s shack, the Acid House, looking towards the mill building and water silo. Protomachines light set to red and an orangy-white during a 390 second exposure. Tungsten balanced.
The Acid House
The exterior of the assayer’s office. Interior lit with the Protomachine’s HSB flashlight.
A Chemical Hotspot
Inside the assayers office at Atolia tungsten mine, abandoned since the ’60s. Judging by the ventilated booths on the left, a dirty chemical process was done in this room. Red, pale blue and green Protomachines flashlight.
About Your Recent Collapse
Subtler than yesterday’s post, but no less complex, this Atolia Mine image is lit with blended orange and pale green light on the ground and wall leaning towards the camera (seen in the Undercut By Time image), with red and green light overlapped on the debris pile through the trapezoidal window. 2 minute exposure, full […]
Slowly Losing the Roof
An experiment in overlapped and blended lighting, this was done with the Protomachines HSB flashlight. Red-orange, purple and lime light from several directions. One of the slowly collapsing buildings at the abandoned Atolia Mine in California’s Mojave Desert last July. 198 second exposure, full moon light on the exterior.
Undercut by Time
Collapsing structures at the Atolia Mine, near Randsburg California. Abandoned for 50 years, the site has really taken a beating recently. Last time I was through here about 10 years ago, this building, and several others, were still standing. 4-minute exposure, pure full moon-light.
