The Byron Hotel on Film

The Byron Overlook

The Byron Overlook

Found in an unmarked box of slides.  I didn’t even remember shooting these until I opened the box. It’s the abandoned Byron Hot Springs hotel, before it was completely covered in stupid graff. This would have been the September 2005 full moon, the last time I ever shot film because I had to: got my first DSLR and came back here the next month. Spooky in there at night, I’ve been with a few people that got wigged out in this building, especially on the top floor.  Only guessing on the EXIF, looks like about 8 minutes on Ektachrome 100, probably a Canon T90.  Pure moonlight.

Built as a swanky Jazz Age resort, it failed in the Great Depression and was commandeered by the military for use as a POW camp during WWII.  After a short stint as a Greek Orthodox Monastery in the ’50s, it stood abandoned for 40 years with a live-in caretaker. Around 2000 they lost the caretaker and the hotel has since succumbed to taggers and vandals.  About 8 minutes, full moon.

The dining room clerestory, lit with green-gelled strobe and red-gelled flashlight.  Only one chance to get it right on film . . . which is why this is the only decent lit image on the roll!
