Modified ’57 Chevy “Super-Stock” drag car, in storage at paul’s Junkyard. Lit by the full moon and Protomachine flashlight during a 108 second exposure.
The Schnetzler Vortex
At September’s workshop, Manu and Greta Schnetzler wanted their portrait done using this gigantic sci-fi movie prop. Done with a minimum of equipment, this set up was colossally difficult, made worse by this being a very tight space (the camera was right against a trailer and the space was closed in on both sides leaving […]
Serious About Sentry Duty
Workshop student Tim Little, at Paul’s Junkyard posing by the tail of the blown up Huey helicopter. It was rare to see this guy NOT grinning during the workshop. What an actor. Yellow and red-gelled strobe. Surprising amount of accumulated moonlight for an 18 second exposure.
Steve Prime
Steve McIntyre doing his best George Clooney grin at the heavily weathered movie-prop piano at Paul’s. Nice shiny new choppers there Steve-o. That’s Pinkerton’s Hells Angels helmet too-what a great prop. Red, yellow and blue-gelled strobe. All hand-held and unsynced. He had to stand very still between pops. 36-second exposure, short enough that the moon […]
Dave Lewis Straightens Up
Thanks for keeping the place neat and tidy Dave!
Ever Vigilant
My co-teacher Joe Reifer . . . uhh, taking 5 . . . late on the 3rd night at one of our workshops. Lit with strobes.
The Rubber Comb Departure
Steve! This cherry post-war Silversides bus has appeared in over a dozen films, most recently, The Master and the upcoming Jackie Robinson movie. It spends it’s time off parked at Paul’s. Hand-held strobe, placed to get that funky shadow.
Where Do You Want Your Moon Buggy?
I try to shoot every student that takes my workshop, posed someplace in the yard. Ungelled strobe on Denver from camera right, the rest was lit with the Protomachine flashlight. Or did I do this all with strobe? I don’t really remember!
The Cardboard Airlock
Set up on the floor of a decaying portable building, in storage at Paul’s Junkyard (still one spot available for the May workshop here!). That big green planet outside the window sure looks close, hope we don’t crash into it. Protomachine flashlight set to blue, purple, green and red.
Heated Cabin
The rare split-level Greyhound Scenicruiser at Paul’s Junkyard (only 1000 made). I’ve shot a number of these in various junkyards over the last 20 years and every single one of them reeks of overflowing toilet inside. A naaaasty design flaw, apparently. I love how that table/platform seems to be galloping alongside the bus. I moved […]
