Bodie Mortician’s Parlor

I was a guest lecturer at Lance Keimig‘s “Mono Lake Night Photography Festival” in June, it’s always fun to talk to a pack of ravenous night photographers.  Plus I got to shoot in Bodie at night one more time (after similar trips in ’03 and ’04).

Lance’s co-teacher Scott Martin let me borrow his Lens Skirt, which blocks reflections when you shoot through windows.  It really did the job for these interiors.

Coffins 2011

A reshoot of an image I shot in 2003.  These were all done with the camera standing on 2 tripod legs and leaning the lens against the glass, as the 3rd “leg.”  The light streaming in on the right wall is from the rising moon.  I lit the rest of the room with a AA maglite (which matches its warm-toned glow), making sure to hit all the walls and ceiling evenly, but not too much, so it didn’t overpower the moonlight.  I added the blue and red light coming through the doorway by walking around the building and shining it through the side and back windows.  Remember, the building is locked up tight, so my lighting angles were extremely limited.

These two were shot through the side window (the end of this display is visible through the doorway in the first image).  It’s combined red, blue and green-gelled flashlights, lit from extreme angles through windows on either side of the building.
