The second shot in the Truck Inn sequence, the sky was just starting to lighten when I completed this frame at about 5:30AM. It’s a stack of three 8-minute exposures yielding 24 minute star trails. Shot at f/11 to increase the diffraction spikes on the street light. Page 30 of my new book, which you should buy immediately!
The Zen-like experience of sitting on my car hood watching the owls that live in the cab of this thing hunt for prey in the weeds around me–while the image slowly burns in and the stars crawl across the sky–it encapsulates everything that I love about night photography. Moments like this are why I’ve done this type of work for nearly 25 years.
