Lets start the new year by looking backwards. This image is from 1992. That summer I visited a dry river in a remote spot in Central California, where the locals tied heavyweight ’50s and ’60s cars to the banks where the river curved, to prevent erosion in the flood season. There was about 50 rusted and battered hulks spread over about a mile, including this 1959 Chrysler Imperial. I revisited the spot a few years ago and almost all the cars, including this one, are gone.
Since this was shot 20 years ago, exposure and lighting specs are scarce, but in looking at the at the original slide I can tell you that it was shot on 160 Tungsten chrome film and that the green and pink were done with a strobe. The exposure was quite short, just long enough to get a little definition on the horizon. It’s interesting to see how my methodology for shooting car interiors was already pretty well developed, even back in 1992.
