Cab-Over Front-Office  :::::  Paul's Junkyard  :::::  October 2011

Cab-Over Front-Office

’70s-vintage Peterbilt cab-over semi-truck at Paul’s Junkyard.  This body was off the frame, sitting on the dirt.  Normally this interior would be 8 feet off the ground and virtually impossible to shoot using these techniques, but I was able to easily set up at shoulder-level in the doorway.  Red-gelled strobe inside the sleeping compartment, blue […]

No One Escapes ::::: Movie Prop Armored Car ::::: September 2011

No One Escapes The Claw

This rusty armored car circles the drain at Paul’s Junkyard.  Shortly after this was taken it succumbed to the claw and shredder.  Yellow-gelled LED on the claw and red-gelled strobe inside the vehicle.  Lots of flashlight on the exposed engine too.  202-second exposure, long enough to get some nice movement in the clouds. We had […]

Night Portraits

During the alumni October workshop at Paul’s last year I did portraits of the students in the junkyard.  Here’s my favorite five. Shooting people with hand held and continuous source lights is tough because most humans can’t sit still long enough and end up blurry.  But with some experimentation and compromise I was able to […]

Count Olaf's Eyes ::::: 1960 Chrysler Imperial Custom Limousine

Count Olaf’s Eyes

Here’s the Lemony Snickett movie prop Chrysler Imperial limo again.  This custom dashboard is utterly unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a junkyard before. This was an intensely complex set up.  Because the passenger area is huge in a limo I had plenty of room to set the tripod up there and point the camera over […]

Yes, it’s that time again!  Joe Reifer and I are holding another night photography and light painting workshop at the amazing Paul’s Junkyard near Lancaster, California.  We opened registration to our mailing list last week and almost filled it, but there’s still a few spots left. April 5/6/7 (thursday, friday, saturday) The basic format of our […]

Flank Against the Fence ::::: 1972 Ford Mustang

Flank Against the Fence

1971/’72 Mustang at Paul’s Junkyard.  Until recently this car was hidden behind a pile of 30′ girders. I focused the camera on the grille and headlights first.  The interior was lit with a green-gelled strobe, the headlights, a natural LED and the red is an LED flashlight reflected off of a white car right behind […]

Pony Withers

Paul’s Junkyard.  Blue and red LED flashlights.  The exposure was short enough that the background remained dark.

Emerald Floorboard ::::: 1980s Olds Cutlass

The Emerald Floorboard

Paul’s Junkyard, September 2011.  I happened upon one of the workshop students, Tor, while he was in the rendering pit shooting this 4-door Oldsmobile Cutlass in the process of being recycled.  He was working blind (unable to use the viewfinder or preview screen), at extremely low angles from inside the car.  When he was done […]
